Patios Case Study

Removing an earth and clay banking, including 30 tonnes of soil – all through an opening of less than a metre.
Erecting retaining walls, steps and installing appropriate drainage systems – while keeping the area as flat and level as possible for patio furniture.
A straight forward installation for us!
Firstly we started the excavation of the existing turfed, raised garden and removed all of the topsoil and clay to a depth of approx 1 metre lower that the original level. This allowed us to install the new concrete wall footings prior to erecting a new retaining wall and steps to lead to the higher garden level.
Once the walls and steps were complete we commenced the installation of the hardcore for the paving. The hardcore we used was a recyled type one, a blend of concrete sized from 40mm to dust. Once compacted this leaves a solid bed from which to work upwards.
A lying course of washed river sand is then installed and drawn flat to the correct levels to ensure good drainage prior to the installation of the paving blocks.
The blocks are laid by hand in a stretcher bond pattern with the edging blocks running at 90 degrees to the main pattern creating a clean border effect.
Once the block have been laid the drainage is then installed at the appropriate points – in this instance we needed to ensure that the area drained completely and did not overspill into the neighbouring property.
Finally, we compacted all of the paving and the joints were filled with a kiln dried silica sand that is specially prepared for use in block paving.
